Getting started

What is Dear Ones?

Dear Ones is a private family keepsake for parents. You save quotes, milestones, photos, voice notes, selfie videos, and letters for each of your children. The app keeps everything organized in per-child timelines, in your own warm voice, until you're ready to hand each child their own keepsake.

Who is it for?

Moms and dads who want to remember the small things — what their child said this morning, the milestone she just hit, the letter you want them to open on their wedding day. It's designed for Christian and traditional families with a wholesome, marriage-affirming tone.

How is it different from a photo app?

Photos are part of it, but the heart of Dear Ones is the writing. You're building a book in your own voice that your child will eventually receive. Quotes, milestones, voice notes, and letters all live in the same timeline as the photos.

Common questions

Does Dear Ones work with my co-parent's phone?

Yes. When mom and dad both sign in to the same family with their Apple IDs, entries sync between their devices through Apple's CloudKit (your own private iCloud). No one else has access. If only one parent uses the app, the other can be added as a "name only" co-parent so they're tagged in entries without needing to install the app.

When do children receive their keepsake?

That's your call. By default, a child can sign in to read their own timeline at age 12. You can change the unlock age per child in the Family tab, mark specific entries as private to mom or dad, or schedule letters to be delivered on a specific date (wedding day, 21st birthday, the day they leave home).

How does the free trial work?

Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial. You won't be charged during the trial, and you can cancel any time before it ends in Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions. If you don't cancel, the plan you picked renews automatically at the price shown at signup.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Open Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions on your iPhone, find Dear Ones, and tap Cancel Subscription. Your access continues until the end of the current billing period. We don't process cancellations directly because Apple handles all billing for App Store apps.

What does the subscription unlock?

Unlimited entries, unlimited children, photo and voice attachments, AI letter assist, scheduled letter delivery, and co-parent contributions. One Family plan covers your whole family — no per-parent or per-child upcharge.

What happens if I cancel?

You keep your existing entries on your device but can't save new ones until you resubscribe. We never delete the content you've already saved.

Do the AI helpers see my personal data?

When you use a helper (for example, "Help me shape it" in the Letter compose flow), only the specific text from that entry is sent to our backend, which forwards it to Anthropic for AI processing. We do not attach your name, email, Apple ID, or device identifier, and we do not log the contents of the request. If you don't use the helpers, nothing ever leaves your device.

What if I lose my phone?

If you and your co-parent are both signed in, your entries sync through iCloud to both devices, so replacing one phone restores the data when you sign back in. If you're the only contributor and you haven't enabled iCloud, your entries live only on your device. We recommend keeping iCloud sync on for keepsake-grade peace of mind.

Trouble?

The app won't open after sign-in

Try signing out of the app (Family tab → Settings → Sign Out) and signing back in with Apple. If the issue persists, email us with your iOS version and the screen where you're stuck.

iCloud sync isn't working between mom and dad

Check that both devices are signed in to iCloud (Settings → Apple ID → iCloud) and that Dear Ones is enabled under iCloud Drive. Both parents need to be signed in to the same Dear Ones family.

A voice note didn't transcribe

Voice note transcription runs on your device using Apple's Speech framework. It requires Speech Recognition permission (Settings → Privacy → Speech Recognition → Dear Ones). If the toggle is off, transcription will be skipped but the audio is still saved.

A letter I scheduled didn't deliver

Scheduled letters are delivered when the child has the app installed and is signed in to the family. If they haven't signed in yet, the letter is held until they do. You can also forward a sealed letter manually from the Letters tab.
